getting ready for baby: health and safety must-haves

if you haven't read any of our other "getting ready for baby" posts, you can find some other useful tips here:
again, just to restate what we've said before, while we are mommies with experience, we're not experts with your baby. any decisions you need to make for you and your baby have to be focused on what works for you. however, here are some tips about what has worked for us.

health and safety is a pretty broad category, but here are our top picks:

monitor
we have talked about this before. it is a must-have and i personally have *loved* having one with a video feature.
Summer Infant Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor with 1.8" Screen - Silver

teethers
teething babes love to chew on anything they can get their hands on. here are a few of my favorite teethers:
Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether
Razbaby RaZ-berry Teether, Red

Learning Curve John Deere Massaging Corn Teether
Learning Curve Massaging Action Teether

Baby Einstein Rattle and Teethe, Caterpillar, Colors May Vary
thermometer
a thermometer is a must. which one you choose is up to you, however i have had a lot of success with the one below and having a child with febrile seizures we have seen our fair share of ambulances and emergency rooms in the past couple of years-----this is the thermometer that the majority of paramedics used for accuracy.
Braun Thermoscan Ear Thermometer with ExacTemp Technology

tylenol
buy it before your little one is born and keep it on hand. you never know when a fever will strike and most likely it will end up being in the middle of the night when you don't want to be running out to find a drugstore that is open 24 hours a day.
Little Fever's Fever/Pain Reliever Infant Drop 1-Ounce (Pack of 2)

motrin (not to be used before 6 months old)
as i said above.....just get it and have it on hand. unlike tylenol/ acetaminophen you can not use motrin/ibuprofen until your child is at least 6 months old. i personally have found it to be much more effective at reducing a fever the quickest.
IBUPROFEN DROPS INFNT BRRY*KPP , DYE FREE

gas drops
get them and put one in your diaper bag and one in the medicine cabinet. chances are you will be happy you did.
Little Tummys Gas Relief Drops for Newborns, Infants & Children, Berry, 1 Ounce (Pack of 3)

saline nose spray
wonderful to have on hand for when the first cold strikes.
Little Noses Saline Spray/Drops, Non-Medicated 1 fl oz (30 ml)

bulb nose syringe
take the one from the hospital and pick up another one---you will be happy that you did.
Bulb Syringe Aspirator

tooth and gum cleaner
NUK/Gerber Gerber Grins and Giggles Infant Tooth and Gum Cleanser, 1.4 Ounce

nail clippers
Safety 1st Hospital's Choice Steady Grip Nail Clippers

neosporen
Neosporin Original First Aid Antibiotic Ointment, 1-Ounce Tube

band-aids
Band-Aid - Children's Adhesive Bandages, Disney Princess, Assorted Sizes 20 ea

Curad Sesame Street Bandages 20 ea

Band-Aid - Children's Adhesive Bandages, Disney Pixar Cars, Assorted Sizes 20 ea

oragel
Orajel Baby Teething Pain .33 oz.

car sun shades

crib rail teether
once your child can stand on his/her own and starts teething the edge of the crib will become a teether. save yourself the trouble now and install the clear gummi teether on your crib and just maybe it will be around for the next munchkin.
Kidkusion Gummi Crib Rail

outlet plugs
once your little one becomes mobile you need to protect him/her from the outlets and cords with items like these. i actually carry a small ziplock bag of outlet protectors in my diaper bag when traveling----they come in handy at an non baby proofed home or hotel room.

Outlet Plug Cover by Kidco

gates
gates are a parents best friend. it will not only keep your little one safe, but you happy as well. i always make a point to limit access to dangerous places like the kitchen or bathrooms with a gate. i was once told that the most dangerous place for a child to be is alone in the house while you are sleeping-----as soon as my first born got to the age where he could possibly start climbing out of the crib i gated the door to his bedroom. if you gate the bedroom door you at least know that *if* they get out they won't be wondering around the house without your guidance and supervision.
Dreambaby Swing Close Gate with Extension, White

Evenflo Crosstown Soft Portable Travel Gate

drawer locks
Dreambaby Safety Latches, 12 Pack

door locks

cabinet locks
